Devout Christians Associate Salvation With Pagan Goddess.

I can see what they meant to get at, obviously -- but where's a professor of Symbology when you really need one?!

I may be wrong, but I don't think anyone ever worshiped Libertas. I think she was the kind of Roman goddess who was always much more ideal than goddess.

Fair enough. I do recall reading somewhere that a lot of Roman Catholics were deeply offended at the idea of erecting a statue of her in the middle of New York Harbor, though.

The whole thing is really very Dante-esque, actually.
